I wrote the other day that I’m completely obsessed with colorful and healthy drinks at the moment. After our trip to Bali (blog post about that coming tomorrow btw!), I’ve added a few new recipes to my repertoire, like the velvet latte and also a blue mermaid latte, which I’ll share the recipe for next week. But I have a couple of good old favorites that I always come back to. I make my matcha latte every breakfast, and several times a week I enjoy a cup of golden milk in the afternoon, instead of that 2 o’clock coffee I always had before. Due to this change, I’m drinking way less coffee now than, say a year ago and even though I love coffee, I must say that I feel much better when I’m drinking less of it.
I’ve shared photos of my golden milk several times on Instagram, and until a couple of weeks ago, I was sure that I had already shared the recipe here on the blog. Turned out that I was wrong. I’ve had photos laying around for months, yet I haven’t used them to put together a blog post. Well, better late than not at all, I guess.
Golden milk is a healthy drink, with the key ingredient being turmeric. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for its health benefits, and it’s very important in Ayurvedic medicine. In Sweden, turmeric became crazy popular a couple of years ago. Since I work in the supplements business, I meet a lot of people who are obsessed with turmeric and they use it for all kinds of remedies, but mostly for the anti-inflammatory properties, it’s supposed to have. Turmeric can be bought as a powder, in capsules as a supplement or as a spice. In Indian food, turmeric is one of the most important spices and it’s used widely. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of turmeric in food, but I do however want to use turmeric for it’s supposed health effects and I’ve found out that golden milk is the perfect thing for me. I season it with a little maple syrup, some ground vanilla, and cardamom and I think it gives the drink an amazing taste. I also add a pinch of cayenne pepper to it, since it’s supposed to have health benefits on the body as well, especially for the digestive tract. I also add a pinch of black pepper, since it increases the absorption of curcumin (one of the most active constituents in turmeric) and the cayenne pepper. And that’s about it. It takes no time to prepare and it tastes great (even though I’m not the biggest fan of turmeric otherwise).
2 1/2 dl | 250 ml oat milk
1 tsp maple syrup
1 tsp ground turmeric
pinch of organic ground vanilla
pinch of ground cardamom
pinch of cayenne pepper
pinch of black pepper
- Add all the ingredients to a small saucepan and heat up while stirring. Don’t bring the milk to a boil, just heat it up.
- Pour the milk into a cup and serve immediately! Enjoy 🙂
